Hello, fellow travel lovers!
This time, I visited Kōzan-ji Temple in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. Unfortunately, it was raining... so I’ve used photos from the official website, but I’ll still give you a full tour of the highlights!
Starting off with the Nanohana (Rapeseed) Road!
On the way from Kizetsu Gorge to Kōzan-ji Temple, vibrant rapeseed flowers were beautifully in bloom, instantly bringing a touch of spring to the atmosphere!
The Expansive Views of Beautiful Temples and Ponds
↑The photo above was borrowed from the tourism association's website. It's indeed a beautiful picture.
Upon arriving at Kōzan-ji Temple, you’ll find numerous halls neatly arranged throughout the grounds, with ponds in between creating a very calming atmosphere.
The sound of raindrops falling into the ponds was soothing, and it made me feel as if my heart was being cleansed.
A Bit Creepy!? The Statue of Four Clinging Babies
What I came across here was a statue of four babies clinging together.
It’s quite striking, and to be honest, it’s a little creepy (haha).
It has such a strange presence that you can't help but stare at it.
A Demon Stomping the Ground!? A Rare Sculpture
As I continued on, I came across a sculpture of a demon stomping the ground. This is pretty rare, isn’t it?
I was so surprised by this scene that I couldn't resist snapping a picture. Kōzan-ji Temple, you’ve definitely got some unexpected surprises!
The Beautiful Mizukake Jizo Statue
The Mizukake Jizo Statue is also a must-see.
The flowers placed around it is real,, and it is beautifully arranged
The flowers, glistening with rain, appeared even more vibrant, and I found myself gazing at them for quite a while.
Actually… Minakata Kumagusu’s Grave is Here!
Here’s something interesting: I didn’t know it at the time, but I found out the next day when I visited the Minakata Kumagusu Memorial Museum!
It turns out that the grave of Minakata Kumagusu, Wakayama’s celebrated giant of natural history, is right here at Kōzan-ji Temple!
There are even records showing that he collected plants in this very area during his lifetime.
If I had known, I would have taken my time to explore more thoroughly… (tears).
So, Kōzan-ji Temple is packed with fascinating nature and sculptures. Even in the rain, it was full of charm! I’m definitely planning to come back on a sunny day for a second visit.
The journey continues... Wishing you all a wonderful trip! – TabiJun
