A Long Line? No Problem! The Popularity of Hemikubo Jinja
I planned to make a quick visit and then head to a New Year’s party… but was met with an unexpectedly long line!
It took about an hour of waiting to finally reach the torii gate.
But if it leads to boosting my financial luck, it’s definitely worth the wait!
Sure to Shine on Social Media! Benzaiten’s Face Cutout Panel and Purification Basin
The first thing that caught my eye was the Benzaiten face cutout panel. Surprisingly, there weren’t many people taking photos, so I felt like a bit of a trailblazer!
Next came the purification basin, adorned with colorful chrysanthemum flowers!
I thought the flowers were real, but they were so perfectly beautiful that I began to doubt it. There are so many photo-worthy spots here!
A Memorial Photo with the Sacred White Snake!
After finally finishing my prayers at the main hall, I discovered a photo spot perfect for commemorating the visit! Here, you can take a picture with an adorable white snake statue, but it’s a test of skill to strike the perfect semi-squat pose so the snake doesn’t get hidden—quite the challenge (and a bit of fun too)!
White Snake Charms and Pettable Statues – A Wealth of Fortune Items!
The shrine offers a variety of white snake-themed items! The **"Shirohebi Tanezen"** is said to increase your money if you keep it in your wallet.
There’s also the **Nade Shirohebi** (pettable white snake), which you can gently stroke—complete with alcohol sanitizer nearby. It really reflects the times we’re living in…
Disappointing! The Elusive "Coin-Spinning Prayer" and "Coin Washing"
At Jakuzukushinja, there’s a unique ritual for boosting financial luck that you can only experience here: the Coin-Spinning Prayer and Coin Washing.
If you keep the purified money in your wallet or home, it’s said to bring a guaranteed boost to your finances! I was so excited to try it, but unfortunately, both the millstone and the sacred water were “out of service” due to the crowd that day. Disappointing, yes, but safety always comes first! Perhaps the sacred white snake is teaching us that “safety is the foundation of fortune” (haha).
The Wish-Granting White Snake Golden Fortune Slip
Another must-try is the exclusive **Wish-Granting White Snake Golden Fortune Slip**! With its luxurious gold-leaf-like design, it feels auspicious even before you open it. My second fortune slip of the year turned out to be another "Sue-kichi" (slightly lucky). Interestingly, the travel fortune advised, "Distant journeys are favorable."
Conclusion: Pray for Financial Luck at Hemikubo Shrine
Because it’s the Year of the Snake, this is your perfect chance to harness the full power of the sacred white snake! Be sure to visit **Hemikubo Shrine** and aim for a boost in your wealth and financial fortune.
### Bonus: Hebi Man, the Elusive Treat!?
The classic course after visiting Hemikubo Shrine is to grab the famous **Hebi Man** from the local confectionery shop, **Koshiji**! Excitedly, I made my way there, but to my surprise…!
“We’ve been making them since last night, but they’re already sold out,” they said.
It was truly a “hands-tied” situation. Or rather, snakes don’t have hands or feet to begin with (haha). Next time, I’ll make sure to go earlier for a rematch!
If you’ve had the chance to try **Hebi Man**, please let me know your thoughts!
The journey continues... Wishing you all a wonderful trip! – TabiJun
