Yamamoto-tei – Exploring the Hidden Mansion and Beautiful Garden in Shibamata!

Tokyo

Hello, fellow travel lovers!
This time, I’ll be introducing a lovely spot next to the Tora-san Memorial Museum, Yamamoto-tei.

The History of Yamamoto-tei

Yamamoto-tei was the residence of Einosuke Yamamoto, the founder of a camera parts factory in Katsushika Shibamata.

It was expanded and renovated between the late Taisho and early Showa periods as a two-family home. The grandeur of that time has been perfectly preserved, and the spacious, impressive architecture is quite striking. The garden is also remarkable, offering a truly luxurious atmosphere.

Relaxing by the Garden’s Lotus Pond – Turtle Sighting!

As you walk through the grounds, you’ll come across a lotus pond. The sight of lotus flowers blooming peacefully within the elegant garden is truly soothing.

You can feel the energy of the past, yet enjoy a calm and peaceful moment here. The beauty of the garden is hard to put into words, so I highly recommend visiting and experiencing it for yourself!

Turtle sighting! It was leisurely basking on a lotus leaf, and watching it made me feel relaxed as well.

Actually, I have two turtles at home as well. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of connection and ended up watching it for a while (haha).

日本庭園ランキングで堂々の4位!

In fact, Yamamoto-tei was ranked 4th in the 2019 Japanese Garden Ranking by the Journal of Japanese Gardening! Here’s the ranking for that year:

  1. Adachi Museum of Art (Shimane)
  2. Katsura Imperial Villa (Kyoto)
  3. Minami-kan (Shimane)
  4. Yamamoto-tei (Tokyo)

Amazingly, Adachi Museum of Art has been ranked number one in Japan for 17 consecutive years! It’s truly an unbeatable champion.

Such an incredibly beautiful garden. I took a break while admiring this stunning scenery.

Cool Breeze and Tea Time

A cool breeze blew in from the garden, soothing both my body and mind. There’s even a nice perk—chairs are available for use, neatly stacked in the hallway, so you can help yourself. That’s really thoughtful!

And with the matcha, you get a nerikiri (traditional sweet), while coffee or juice comes with cookies! It’s perfect for relaxing while enjoying the garden and having a peaceful tea break.

Be sure to stop by during your Shibamata stroll!

When visiting Katsushika Shibamata, this is definitely a spot you’ll want to check out. Enjoy a leisurely time in the beautiful garden, and savor tea inside the historically rich building.

The journey continues... Wishing you all a wonderful trip! – TabiJun
