Challenge of Wanko Soba at Bashokan in Hiraizumi

Sightseeing area

Hello, fellow travel lovers!

I had Wanko Soba at the long-established restaurant 'Bashokan' in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture!

This time, I took on the challenge of Bashokan's specialty, the 'Mori-dashi style Wanko Soba.

Now, let's dive into the challenge!

Amazed by the generous portion of the Mori-dashi style Wanko Soba!

At first, 24 bowls were brought out, stacked on two trays!"登場!

I was stunned by the amount of soba lined up in front of me all at once.

And that's not the end of it!

After finishing, if you ask for a refill by saying 'Please bring more,' they generously offer one tray (which means 12 bowls) for free!

Everyone finished it all!

Now, we tackled the first 24 bowls. We kept going, changing the flavor with different condiments.

At one point, we couldn’t help but worry, 'Won’t this affect our dinner later?' Yet, everyone managed to finish it all brilliantly!

Since the Mori-dashi style doesn’t rush you with speed, we were able to take our time and enjoy the meal together.

The sense of accomplishment from everyone pushing through and finishing to the last bowl was an indescribable feeling of fulfillment!

Did you know that 12 bowls count as just over one regular serving?

When we asked the staff at checkout, they told us that 12 bowls equal just over one regular serving of soba.

In other words, the initial 24 bowls are equivalent to two regular servings!

It really made me realize just how daunting the portion size of Wanko Soba is.

Yet, the temptation of a free refill is part of Wanko Soba's irresistible charm.

The charm of Bashokan and a final word

The atmosphere at Bashokan is a calm, traditional Japanese space, and the charm lies in being able to enjoy soba to your heart's content.

It becomes a memorable part of your trip, and the act of eating itself is an event.

Even if you're new to Wanko Soba, I highly recommend giving it a try!
