Genjiyama Park

Kanagawa

Genjiyama Park is an attractive spot where you can enjoy the nature and history of Kamakura.

This time, I took the route from Kewaizaka to Zeniarai Benten Shrine.

Kewaizaka

Since Kewaizaka is registered as a Japanese Cultural Heritage site, I started from the entrance of Kewaizaka and headed towards the top of the park.

Was it a bit of a mess? Perhaps the weather was bad the day before?

It’s a steep rocky slope.

A passerby lamented that she wouldn't have taken this route if she had known how challenging it was.

I completely agree! Going downhill seems scarier and more slippery.

The statue of Minamoto no Yoritomo

As the park's symbol, a bronze statue of Minamoto no Yoritomo stands proudly.

Minamoto no Yoritomo established the Kamakura Shogunate in 1185, founding Japan's first military government.

By this point, the population density starts to feel more typical of Kamakura.

I now had to wait for people to clear out before I could take a photo.

Passing through the park and heading towards Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine.

Time spent here: 20 minutes (passing through only).
