Nankishirahama Kizetukyo Valley

Wakayama

The Kizetsukyo Gorg Takimibashi

It's the Kizetsukyo Gorge in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. It took about 15 km, 23 minutes by car from Toretore Market to get here. Across the road, there are public toilets and parking spaces for about 5-6 cars. There are plenty of giant rocks scattered around.

The Kizetsukyo Gorg Fudo Falls (Fudo no Taki)

As soon as you cross the bridge, you'll see the Fudou Waterfall. It's full of negative ions.

Head towards the white building on the right side of the waterfall.

The Kizetsukyo Gorg Fudo Myoo

It's the building of the Fudo Myoo deity near the waterfall that was visible from below. There are even giant rocks on the roof... And I spotted a large beehive in the middle! Although I didn't see any flying bees.

Took off my shoes and entered to pray.

Once inside the temple, you'll notice a massive rock ceiling protruding! The waterfall seen up close from the window is also breathtaking! I'm so impressed with how they built this place here.

磨崖三尊大石仏(まがいさんそんだいせきぶつ)

After about a 10-minute hike up a narrow mountain trail from the waterfall, you'll arrive at a stone Buddha carved into a single rock. It's quite impressive up close. The main Amida Buddha is 7.3 meters tall, approximately half the size of the Great Buddha in Nara. The climb was definitely worth it!"

There were some slippery spots along the way. Be careful as there are no handrails to grab onto.

Returned to the entrance and followed the arrow for the observation point.

The river flowing next to it is the Aizu River. It's clear. It seemed possible to descend all the way down. But there were signs cautioning against it due to the danger.

The legend of "Giant Footprints"

In the past, it is said that a Giant sat on Mount Takao and tried to wash his feet in Tanabe Bay, leaving behind a footprint on this rock with the sole of his foot.

The view from the observation point

Arrived at the observation point. From here, I can see the red bridge I crossed earlier, the Takimi Bridge, and the cliff-carved triple Buddha statues.

Duration of stay at Kizetsukyo Gorge: 30 to 40 minutes
