Let’s start our journey! Beginning at the free parking lot near Daibutsu Square.
We parked the car at the free parking lot near Daibutsu Square, and the adventure began! At the entrance, after paying the admission fee and asking for the best route, a friendly staff member thoughtfully marked a path on the map with a red marker, avoiding steep slopes. This was such a valuable tip!
The Largest Stone Buddha in Japan! Daibutsu Square
We arrived at Daibutsu Square right away and were greeted by the 31-meter-tall seated stone Buddha, the largest in Japan. It’s even more massive than I imagined! Nearby, we spotted what seemed like a perfect spot for Zen meditation. It felt like a chance to share a special moment in harmony with the Great Buddha. Definitely Instagram-worthy… though, apologies if that’s not what the spot is meant for!
The Mysterious and Enigmatic Kobo Daishi Goma Cave
Next, we headed to the Kobo Daishi Goma Cave.
Rows of Rakan statues lined up were truly impressive… until I noticed a few with their heads missing here and there. It was oddly surreal, and I couldn’t help but think, “Who’s going to fix that for them?!”
Statue of Prince Shotoku and Yuimakutsu Cave
Statue of Prince Shotoku
Yuimakutsu Cave
As we walked further, we came across the statue of Prince Shotoku and Vimoksa Cave (Yui-ma-kutsu). While there were explanations available, they were a bit complex, leaving me with a simple “Oh, interesting…” reaction (haha). It’s undoubtedly a must-see spot for history enthusiasts!
To the Okunoin and Jigoku Nozoki!
As we ventured further, we encountered intriguingly named spots like "Murokutsu" and "Nippaidō," whose names alone sounded cool and captivating.
And finally, we reached the stairs leading to Jigoku Nozoki! Once you get here, a thrilling and breathtaking view awaits you.
Jigoku Nozoki Observation Deck
Here we are at the famous "Jigoku Nozoki"!
Peeking over the edge of the sheer cliff is an absolutely thrilling moment.
You might need to wait in line a bit to snap a commemorative photo, but the view from the opposite side is equally breathtaking. If you’re not a fan of heights, taking pictures from there might be a safer and more comfortable option!
Taking a Relaxing Break in Front of Hyaku-shaku Kannon
After enjoying the thrill of Jigoku Nozoki, it’s time to calm your mind at Hyaku-shaku Kannon.
Said to be the guardian deity of traffic safety, this Kannon statue is accompanied by a perfectly placed bench right in front. Sitting down, I intended to offer a prayer… but before I knew it, I was just gazing blankly at the statue. Instead of praying for safety, I found myself completely disarmed, succumbing to the tranquil, relaxing aura of the Kannon.
The Quarry and the Laputa Wall
Next, we headed to the quarry, a place that feels like stepping straight into the world of the movie *Castle in the Sky (Laputa)*. The sheer rock faces and overwhelming scale made me want to shout, “Balse!” at the top of my lungs. This is a must-see for any Ghibli fan!
Plus, there’s a little surprise waiting for you at the quarry’s observation deck. Scan the QR code there, and you can experience an AR feature that lets you take a photo alongside the stonecutters of the past!
Who knew the quarry could be this high-tech?!
What to Bring and Important Tips
When visiting Nokogiriyama, be prepared for plenty of walking!
- Water is a must-have! There are no places to buy water within Nihonji Temple, so make sure to bring some with you beforehand.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes! Sneakers or trekking shoes are highly recommended.
- Bringing some snacks or light refreshments is a great idea! Recharge your energy along the way!
After Exploring Nihonji Temple... It’s Time for a Hearty Meal!
After all that walking, you’re bound to be starving. That’s the perfect time to head straight to *Kanaya Shokudo*, famous for its delicious fried horse mackerel (aji fry)!
This popular restaurant has been featured in the media several times, and this time, I went with the mixed fry set meal.
The plump and juicy aji fry is truly a “gem of flavor”!
And to wrap it all up, it’s got to be a relaxing soak in the hot springs!
After satisfying my appetite, it was time to refresh my mind and body at *Natural Hot Spring Umibe no Yu*! This spot is known for its breathtaking sunset views, but honestly, waiting for the sunset might lead to a case of over-soaking (haha). This time, the stunning ocean view alone was more than enough to enjoy!
As I gazed at the scenery from the bathtub, I decided, "I’m definitely coming back here." The exhaustion from Nokogiriyama vanished completely, making for a perfectly satisfying end to the day!
Ending the Day with an Undersea Drive!
Feeling refreshed after the hot springs, it was time for the final leg of the journey! On the way back, we took the undersea drive via *Umihotaru*. As the sun set, we couldn’t help but feel a bit nostalgic, chatting about how amazing the day had been. It was a perfect, satisfying end to an unforgettable trip.
From Nokogiriyama to Kanaya Shokudo, and finally the hot springs… it was such a fulfilling day! This is the kind of trip that makes you want to go back again right away!
The journey continues... Wishing you all a wonderful trip!
