Discover Rokkakudo at the Stunning Izura Coast, Ibaraki

Ibaraki

Hello, fellow travel lovers!

This time, I’m introducing Rokkakudo, located in Kitaibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

“What is that red building?!”

You’ve probably seen it in photos along the coast — that incredibly striking little structure by the sea.

I was so curious that I finally went to see it myself.

First, buy the entrance ticket

With the ticket in hand, I stepped inside… and suddenly I was in Okakura Tenshin’s world.

Rokkakudo is connected to Okakura Tenshin, the famous thinker of modern Japanese art.

So first, I visited the museum and studied seriously about “what modern art is…”

Yes, I really tried to memorize it.
(Though honestly, maybe about 30% of it remains in my brain now.)

Walked toward the sea

The moment I stepped out of the museum—

The sound of waves. The smell of the ocean. The wide horizon spreading out before me.

All the knowledge I had just learned was instantly washed away by the sea.

My brain: completely reset.

Nature wins over art.

The Sea and Rokkakudo

The red pavilion against the deep blue ocean — this contrast is simply unfair.

Look to the right and you see dramatic rocky coastline and powerful waves.

Look to the left and the sea becomes calmer.

You could stare at this view forever.

Spending time just quietly sitting here… That is true luxury.

Okakura Tenshin’s Former Residence (Izura Villa)

This was the place where Tenshin reflected and thought.

A quiet retreat for ideas and creativity.

Even great artists need to eat.

Thinking that meals were cooked here somehow makes him feel more human and relatable.

“Asia is One”

“Asia is One.” Maybe start by feeling the world… beginning from Ibaraki.

A message written over 100 years ago that still resonates today.
