Hello, fellow travel lovers!
This time, I’ll be introducing Tokei Shrine, a World Heritage site in Wakayama Prefecture.
Toukei Shrine was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" in October 2016.
First, you’re greeted by the dragon-shaped water basin at the entrance! Since it was raining, the dragon seemed even more lively than usual (lol).
The lack of people made it a privilege to take my time worshiping, a special perk of visiting on a rainy day.
As I was walking around the shrine grounds, I spotted something dynamic in the corner – a lively-looking statue.
Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a statue related to the famous Battle of Dan-no-ura from the Heike Monogatari.
During the battle, there’s a tale where seven roosters, representing the red (Taira clan) and white (Minamoto clan), were made to fight to decide which side to support.
The statue of the two roosters, recreating that scene, may be small in number but is full of intensity! It felt as if they were about to spring into action.
Even on a rainy day, you can feel the breath of history at Tokei Shrine. I highly recommend a visit!
The journey continues... Wishing you all a wonderful trip! – TabiJun
