Genzankutsu

Tochigi

This cave in Nasu-Shiobara is well-known as the 'Genji's Hidden Cave Historical Site and Stalactite Cave,' where members of the Genji clan, pursued by Minamoto no Yoritomo, are said to have taken refuge.

The stalactite cave is about 50 meters long. Inside the cave, the cool air and the sense of stillness make it feel as if time has stopped.

The signboard at the entrance of the cave

When you purchase a ticket, a guide will smoothly and fluently explain the history of the cave, as if speaking water from a board. It's okay if you feel like you’ve understood it to some extent.

After the explanation, it’s finally time to go into the cave!

We were greeted by Ikkyu-san. What’s going on?!

They used to cook and prepare food inside the cave as well.

Seeing them polishing rice in their samurai attire gives a glimpse into their unrelenting daily life.

Bats are lurking deeper inside.

The cave features various rock formations jutting out.

I wouldn’t want to live here.

After exiting the cave, you'll find the exhibition room.

Old money is on display. This year, new banknotes were issued for the first time in 20 years. The 3D holograms show how technology has advanced.

Near the exit, there is a small souvenir shop as well.

The cave and exhibits really boost your tourist excitement. Genzankutsu offers a unique experience of exploring a cave, and it's especially worthwhile for history enthusiasts. It's definitely a spot to visit if you're in Nasu-Shiobara.
