Hello, fellow travel lovers!
This time, I'd like to introduce Motsuji Temple, located in Hiraizumi Town, Iwate Prefecture.
I visited Motsuji Temple on an overcast May day, with rain looming. Despite the weather, its charm was undeniable.
In June 2011, Motsuji Temple was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Monuments and Sites of Hiraizumi – Representing the Buddhist Pure Land.
The Enchanting Pure Land Garden, Enhanced by Overcast Skies
As soon as you step into Motsuji Temple, it's as if you've traveled back in time to the Heian period, with the scenery unfolding before you.
The overcast skies enhance the beauty of the Pure Land Garden, creating an even more enchanting and dreamlike atmosphere.
The Mysterious Presence of Oizumi-ga-Ike Pond
Under the cloudy sky, the surface of the water reflects the surrounding scenery like a mirror, as if the heavens and the earth have become one.
I feel a sense of vitality in the trees stretching from the rocky mountains toward the sky.
The elegant and charming Jōgyōdō Hall.
It is the only remaining original building. While it lacks flamboyance, it exudes a timeless charm.
It is a place for Buddhist practices and rituals, such as memorial services for ancestors or mizuko (infant) memorials.

There was no explanation for this stone Buddha, but for some reason, it caught my attention...
Strolling through the grounds, you can feel the history.
A sign warns, "Do not enter the cave!"
Being told that makes me want to go in even more!
Though autumn is the star for maple trees, I spotted adorable flowers that looked like little bamboo-copters in bloom.
My travel companion received a stunning ”goshuin”. The bold calligraphy exudes a sense of dignity and energy.
Summary
Mōtsū-ji, visited on a cloudy day, was filled with a different kind of charm compared to a sunny day.
Even on a day when it looks like rain, as long as you have an umbrella, you'll fully enjoy your visit. Definitely give it a try!
