Meet the Marine Life of the Kii Peninsula at Kyoto University Shirahama Aquarium! Plus, a Rare Octopus Escape Incident!

Wakayama

Hello, fellow travel lovers!

This time, I’m introducing the Kyoto University Shirahama Aquarium, located just outside Banshozan Park!

As the name suggests, this aquarium is operated by Kyoto University, and all of the approximately 500 species on display are exclusively from the seas around the Kii Peninsula!

The aquarium is known for its carefully curated exhibits, filled with a strong local vibe, showcasing creatures you won’t see anywhere else.

An Unbelievable Escape!? The Moment an Octopus Tried to Flee Its Tank!

And then, out of nowhere, an octopus... attempted a daring escape!

It skillfully tried to slip through a small hole at the top of the tank, making its escape attempt!

I snapped a photo and moved on, thinking, "Huh? Do octopuses really do this?" But later, I heard a commotion with people shouting, "Oh no! The octopus!" and the entire aquarium was in an uproar (laughs).

It turns out, it was quite a rare occurrence after all!

Then, I spotted a kue fish on display—the very same fish I had for dinner last night, famous for its kue nabe (hot pot). I couldn’t help but think, "Sorry… I ate your friend last night," feeling a little guilty.
